Speed doesn't slow down with a VPN?

So I thought that my connection speed is bound to drop when I connect to a VPN, but instead, my speed increased. Is this normal? I asked a friend of mine and he said my ISP must be throttling my speeds. '<CENSORED>' is the VPN that I bought. Maybe my ISP throttled my speed due to my excessive downloading? Can anyone explain?

This question sounds like one for other online communities, so you should probably look elsewhere and seek professionals.
BUT
I will give you my guesses to what it may be. (I am by no means a professional, rather talking from experience of various VPN providers.)
My guesses are:

• Your internet service provider or router could be blocking certain protocols or ports. (Public WiFi tend to do this.) For example if they blocked certain ports or protocols, using a VPN would bypass the block systems. By searching on a popular VPN's site It states:
  "Your ISP might not always send your traffic along the most efficient route possible. The potential reasons for this are numerous, but this can lead to a slightly longer distance to your traffic target than there should be. Sometimes, using a VPN can break that chain of inefficient connections. Our VPN Service hides where your traffic is coming from and where it’s headed, so your ISP might send it along a different path than it usually sends your traffic. If this is the case, then a VPN might increase your internet speed every time you connect. "
• Cache. Some VPNs have "recursive name server" services which they store some website information on the VPN provider's side so it loads up the content quicker. (This is a Quick brief understanding of some services I looked up. The information may not be accurate)
